Amikacin Sulfate Injectable
Although parenteral use of amikacin is only FDA approved in dogs, it is often used in most species for treatment of serious gram-negative and staphylococcal infections when the adverse effects of other aminoglycosides are a concern. Because aminoglycosides have an inherent toxicity and should be administered parenterally, use should be limited to treatment of serious infections with either a documented lack of susceptibility to other, less toxic antibiotics or in cases in which the clinical situation dictates immediate treatment of a presumed gram-negative infection before culture and susceptibility results are reported
Amikacin is also FDA-approved for intrauterine infusion in mares
